FAQ

General Questions

What is Inferno SCP?

Inferno Source Code Project is a remake of the FS2 retail version of the 'Inferno' campaign using the updated FS2 engine created by The Source Code Project team.

How long has it been in development?

INF SCP has been in development from a few months after Inferno Release 1 was launched in July 2003. However the mod has been officially under progress from Nov 2000.

Why has it taken so long since R1 in 2003 to release?

After Release 1 it was decided to scrap a good chunk of the original mod and to rebuild it from scratch with the SCP engine in mind. This included replacing the weapons and upgrading the ship models.

What about the INF SCP release?

INF SCP is being released using a customized version of the SCP code base as a stand alone build.

What's the system requirements?

The minimum to run this version successfully is about the following:

600 Mhz CPU
128-256 MB Ram
32-64 MB T&L gfx card (GeForce 2/4MX)
550mb Hard drive space (More required for mods)

What does stand alone mean?

INF SCP is designed to run without the use of a retail FS2 install. It includes the minimum files required to run the game and the mod. It is not compatible with the FS2 retail campaign or other user campaigns designed for the regular SCP.

So I don't need any files from FS2 at all?

No additional files from FS2 retail or from the SCP media VP files are required for it to run.

Can I have INF SCP installed at the same time as FS2 Open/Retail?

Yes you can switch between them at will be using the launcher. You can have INF SCP installed with FS2 Retail, FS2 Open or any other stand alone mods.

I don't want a stand alone build, can I install it over FS2?

Installing over FS2 will not work and will break your copy of FS2 Open. You must install it into its own directory.

Why won't other FS2 Ships/mods work?

As part of the conversion to the stand alone build. All FS2 texture maps were replaced and had their names changed, therefore any ship required the original texture maps will not work without conversion. Please see the modding guide for more details.

Is there Multi player Support?

Due to the enhanced limits of the INF SCP executable, playing multi player via FS2Net is not possible and is disabled via the code in our version of the game.

Game play Questions

What SCP features does INF SCP use?

We use many features of SCP, from new weapon types to graphical capabilities. Here's some of the highlights:

- Fighterbeams
- Player Mounted Flak
- Species Support
- Ballistic Primaries
- Some High Polygon Models
- In Game Cutscenes

What kind of weapons does INF SCP have?

INF SCP uses many types of weapons, all of which are faction specific. For example the Vasudans have an entirely different weapon set to the Terrans or the Earth Alliance.

Here's a small example of weapon types:

-Plasma cannons
-EMP cannons
-Disruptors and disruptor missiles
-TAG batteries
-Bomber-only primaries
-Linear shockwave missiles
-Cluster flak
-Torpedo barrages
-Fighterbeams
-Ammo based weapons

How many ships are flyable?

There are 27 flyable fighters and 15 flyable bombers. However not all of these will be flyable in the main campaign.

Technical Questions

Do you use high poly (HTL) ships in your mod?

We have a few high poly models but most models are in standard FS2 retail polygon counts and will remain that way.

I have a slow system, will you provide lower poly models?

We provide lower polygon versions of most HTL models. They are installed into a backup directory and can be copied over the HTL ones if needed. However some models can not be provided in a lower polygon form. Please see the manual for more information.

What texture formats are used?

We use up to 2048*2048 resolution versions of fighter craft textures in DDS format and up to 512*512 for capital ship tile maps.
Weapon effects are in either PCX, ANI, or DDS/EFF format.

Wait no TGA files?

We found that TGA files caused too much slowdown on lower end systems. Therefore none will be provided as we want to keep compatibility with as many systems as possible.

Why not use animated glow maps?

Animated glow maps cause massive slowdown on a majority of systems and will not be supported for use with INF SCP. Using the FS Open animated glow maps may also look strange as some ships may use custom maps as well as the regular FS2 ones and so would not be fully animated.
